Solar-as-a-Service

You probably have never heard of it, because we pretty much invented it. In a nutshell, the Solar-as-a-Service model is a better way of delivering the benefits of solar to your school. In this unique model, solar costs your school nothing, because you are not BUYING solar, you’re just realizing the benefits.

How is this possible?

Sun FundED enlists outside investors who fund the capital requirements in exchange for monetizing renewable energy credits that your school can’t use anyway.

A contract is then drawn up, under which you agree to house the solar equipment at no costs to you and Sun FundED agrees to coordinates the development, construction, regulatory requirements, and all ongoing services and maintenance of your solar program.

The model lets you control costs, reduce risk, support sustainability, and make a greater investment in your classrooms. And you don’t have to do anything except focus on education.

DOES SOLAR WORK?

Yes! And we know this because:

  • We have 25 years of meteorological data (sunshine), specifically in your area.
  • We use proven software, which generates utility rates, development tasks & financial modeling.
  • Many others are already successfully using solar in various industries throughout your area and state.

How much will it cost our school?

$0 Down.

If your school qualifies for Sun FundED’s Solar-as-a-Service, your school benefits from:

  • NO outlay of money
  • Substantial savings in Year 1
  • NO payback period
  • NO debt

Then how do you make money?

We earn a developer fee when closing on the project with the investor. We also earn a management fee of 3.5% of the monthly service fee paid by the school for ongoing property management services.  This management fee is built into the flat, fixed, predictable service fee and is not in addition to the monthly service fee. And it doesn’t take away from projected savings.

We don’t earn based on our forecast or from the savings you realize. This is NOT a performance contract, guaranteed energy savings contract, PPA, or lease.

Do we need to run an RFP?

No. Unless you want to purchase solar. By law, our Solar-as-a-Service model eliminates the need for an RFP because Solar-as-a-Service is a true service agreement with $0 down. We have validated with multiple attorneys, confirmed this with state regulators, and our clients are already doing it.

What are the typical contract terms?

The standard contract term of 25 years is fairly standard for both the solar and financial industries. It’s also consistent with the scope of schools’ long-term planning and bond deals.

This length of contract produces optimal financing terms for your school’s benefit. In addition, our outside investors require a 25-year warranty to mitigate the risk on their investment.

You can expect the solar panels to produce for potentially 30- 40+ years. Which represents decades of revenues for your school district. That’s something your successors will thank you for over and over again!

What if our school’s situation changes during the contract?

Good question. It’s possible that many different factors could change that would affect your solar contract – your land needs might change, regulations could change, and technology is always changing.

The first thing you need to know is that during your contract term, if your needs change, you have options to expand, amend or buy out the contract. It’s always in our best interests to keep your school happy, because that keeps the investors happy.

In all likelihood, technology will change and improve. And if that happens, we will probably be notifying you of the innovation (new batteries, more efficient inverters, etc.). We would then handle the financing for your new technology just like we handled the financing on your original equipment. And it will cost you nothing, just like the first time.
